dc4free#20: national cathedral
we've made the trip to the national cathedral several times now, but neither renee's parents nor mine had been, so we went again over xmas. it's a beautiful, awesome building to tour, even if it does leave me a bit cold sometimes. i much prefer little tiny incense-scented anglican chapels in the woods of england somewhere (although i've never actually been in one of them) to huge stone buildings that took like 80 years to build and have no steel in them (my father-in-law was quite impressed by that architectural detail). this pic is one my mom took of the altar in what i believe was the st. joseph chapel. the whole place is beautiful, but i'm always happiest when i think that i am standing in the place where pres. jed bartlet gave his great "two cathedrals" soliloquy.
gratia tibi ago, domine.
haec credam a deo pio, a deo justo, a deo scito?
cruciatus in crucem.
tuus in terra servus, nuntius fui; officium perfeci.
cruciatus in crucem. eas in crucem.
best. tv scene. ever.

better than when he hired Charlie? better than when Toby and Josh got left in the midwest and decided to try to help the middle class afford college after meeting a father in the bar?
"I'm Toby Zigler....I work at the white house"

I thought " 20 Hours In America" was also a good episode, plus the Cathedral seen ranks up there also, but you have to think of another scene in the Two Cathedrals that was as good.
When Bartlett was walking with Charlie and he said " The National Cathedral, you know they say you could take the Washington Monement and lay it on it's side and it would fit in there end to end. We should try it sometime."

you know, to even approach making a list of my favoritie ww moments would be daunting . . . but it also sounds like fun. just so hard b/c there are so many (mark, i loved the "i'm toby zeigler . . . i work @ the white house" ep, not least b/c i'm a notre dame fan and the father wanted to send his daughter to nd).
and, christopher, some of my favorite scenes have featured charlie: the carving knife thing that reduced him to tears, his "i'm staying w/ my team . . . people should stop trying to make me not do that" line to leo, taking the h.s. football player to vote, ad nauseam. like i said, it's a fantastic show, and i miss it like crazy (although i do watch studio 60 -- and like it -- and i hear sorkin's screenwriting "charlie wilson's war," plus i can always go rent the 2 seasons of "sportsnight" -- my wife thinks i have a little thing for sorkin; i assure her it's really that i have a little thing for toby zeigler). thanks for the comments!
