this week's excursion took us to great falls, md (the link's to a va site, but we were on the md side). renee's parents were up to visit family, and her dad wanted to see the falls. i thought it would probably be lame, but was pleasantly surprised to see a beautiful part of the potomac river just a few miles from our house. alongside the river, all the way from cumberland, md, to georgetown is the potowmack canal, which george washington imagined but never saw built (it was completed after his death). it's a great daytrip, and a pretty amazing feat of engineering for 1785.
